As a physician with over 30 years of experience, I am aware that doctors
from various fields are performing ultrasound of abdomen. This should not
be the case, unless the doctors have had formal training in this context. This should only be undertaken by trained radiologists. The Ministry of Health requests every radiologist to pay a yearly license fee of Rs 20 000 for performing ultrasound of abdomen.
The above situation is not healthy, and the ministry should take appropriate measures to protect patients from having ultrasound of abdomen done by any Tom, Dick and Harry. We need competent radiologists. By doing so, many erroneous diagnoses would be avoided.
