Searing issues

No tell-tale smoke can there be

without a fire,

a fearful augury.

An elaborate or makeshift pyre

signifying the end’s end

saddens, yet inflames

no sentiment, provided

there is no animus.

But noxiousness piling

up in the air, from indiscretion,

from careless acts, verging

on criminality, knowingly or not, can

and does raise the temper

of earth’s anger exceedingly.

The trapped heat of vehemence

unleashed randomly, sadly

causes much chaos and loss

and immeasurable harm.

Whether fire precedes smoke

or acrid smoke precedes fire,

the latter does take

its toll with consequences dire.
