Imponderables and perplexities

The field gets indefatigably tilled,

the soil lavishly nourished

for a bounty yield, for a crop

that would please Ceres and Demeter,

but the ample harvest much hoped- for

would depend on the weather; no sop

can work to confer protection,

a shield against the harsh season.

Then on another (higher?) plane,

the panoply of power and privileges,

inexplicably inordinate

in the eyes of others,

less fortunate or not at all fortunate;

the armamentarium of immunities

and impunities to boot-

these are for precious services rewarded,

in the public interest

we are made to understand;

it is, however, not a case of what is good

for the goose is good

for the gander, as plainly evident!
